Edward Loveden Townsend was born in 1750 (see Notes), into a family whose maternal ancestors had been in possession of manorial land in Buscot since Elizabethan times, and he was educated at Winchester School and Trinity College, Oxford. The “manor of Buscot” was bequeathed to him by a great-uncle with the proviso that Edward must renounce the Townsend surname in favour of Loveden, which he did when he was twenty-one, so becoming Edward Loveden Loveden.
