Street of Shame or Street of Adventure? St Bride’s Fleet Street and the World of the Media

David Meara

Archdeacon Emeritus of London

St Bride's Church, Fleet Street is an iconic London church, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and with his tallest spire, which became the inspiration for the tiered wedding cake.  It has had a long association with the printed word, and for the past 150 years has been the spiritual home of the British Press, whose offices were clustered around Fleet Street until they scattered across the capital towards the end of the twentieth century. It continues to exercise a unique Ministry to the Press, and the talk will look at some of the issues this raises, as well as reflecting on the importance of a free press for the maintenance of a democratic society.
